Benefits of a Small Business Card

November 1st, 2008

Until recently, most credit card companies focused their attention primarily on consumers and ignored the potential as well as the needs of small business owners. Much of this lack of interest was due to the rate of small business failures during the 1980s. But the late 1990s brought much prosperity and success and credit card issuers took notice. They began providing business cards specifically designed to meet the needs of the small business owner.

Business credit cards offer a variety of benefits. While these offers were not typically available in the past, an increasing number of credit card issuers are offering small business credit cards as well as benefits that are definitely worth considering.

Here are a few of the reasons why so many small business owners are selecting business credit cards:

  • Extended cash flow - The primary reason that many small businesses fail is due to a lack of capital. While a business loan is great for startup costs and large projects, a small business credit card can help to regulate the cash flow of daily business operations.
  • Rewards and bonuses - If you own a small business and frequently entertain, travel or purchase products and supplies from specific merchants then you have the opportunity to earn rewards and bonuses that can reduce your overall operating expenses.
  • Simplified record keeping - The maintenance of proper records is critical for the success of any small business. A small business credit card makes that possible by providing detailed statements and the ability to monitor spending according to employee and category.
  • Higher credit limits – Small business credit cards typically offer far higher credit limits than you would be able to achieve through a standard consumer credit card. In fact, some small business credit cards offer no preset spending limits at all. If you have significant spikes as a result of inventory or large expenditures, small business credit cards can offer you the flexibility you need to ensure that your business operations are kept up and running.
  • Low interest rates – You will find that many small business credit cards offer lower interest rates than standard consumer credit cards.
  • Emergency credit needs - In running a business, sometimes there are unexpected circumstances that arise. If you work on a cash basis, a small business credit card can be particularly helpful. You can have money available to you to use and then repay it over time.
